Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Duties Description This is a seasonal position at DEC’s Wildlife Health Unit (WHU) in Delmar, NY. The candidate is responsible for assisting biologists with a range of administrative and technical tasks related to the diagnosis and surveillance of wildlife diseases in animals ranging in size from hummingbirds to moose.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Collecting tissues from deer heads for chronic wasting disease testing; includes unpacking heads, cleaning and returning coolers, aging deer by tooth wear, entering data, and shipping samples for laboratory testing.
• Driving to collect or deliver specimens.
• Assisting with administrative tasks such as monitoring Wildlife Health Unit phone messages, maintaining monthly vehicle mileage reports and service schedules, maintaining, and assisting with supply inventories, orders, and distribution, and filing and retrieving paper necropsy records, as needed.
• Cleaning and stocking necropsy rooms and utensils; operating and maintaining autoclave.
• Unpacking specimen deliveries, entering specimens into database, cleaning and returning coolers.
• Cleaning and maintaining specimen refrigerators and freezers, organizing frozen tissue samples, archiving temperature recording charts.
• Operating and maintaining pathological waste incinerator and incinerator building; maintaining incinerator reporting log and managing ash.
• Assisting with or performing wildlife necropsies, as directed.
• Maintaining dermestid beetle colony, cleaning skeletal materials and curating WHU skeletal reference collection.
• Managing eagle carcass inventory and shipment to Federal Repository.
• Conducting wildlife mortality field investigations and collecting specimens.
• Assisting with the preparation of reports and other outreach materials, as directed.
• Supervising volunteers/interns, as needed.
Incumbent will require rabies vaccination and acceptable blood titer. Candidate will need to successfully complete Animal Crematory Operator Certification Program within 3 months from appointment date. Candidate should have a strong interest in wildlife diseases, be well organized and computer literate, be able to tolerate noxious odors, and be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 11/30/2021. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to date listed. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
