Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND obtain a New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant or be eligible to obtain such certificate within one (1) year of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have the following:
• Experience working with students with disabilities, particularly deaf or hard of hearing students;
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language; and
• Experience working with adults as part of a team.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for two Special Education Assistants (Substitute) positions at the New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD). The incumbents of these positions will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school’s education program in the absence of regular staff. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide direct supervision to students;
• Assist Instructors in the delivery and practice of content;
• Supervise students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;
• Escort students from class to class; and
• Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: These will be temporary, on-call positions. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Verification of degree and/or transcripts will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment. Continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining appropriate certification. The work schedule for this position includes the hours of Monday 7:45am to 3:45pm, and Tuesday through Friday 6:45am to 2:45pm. Substitutes are notified by phone when services are needed and every effort is made to give 24–hour prior notice.
