Duties Description The New York State Division of the Budget (DOB) serves as primary fiscal advisor to the Governor, and is charged with developing, negotiating, and implementing one of the largest government budgets in the country. Our work is high-impact public service with a long-standing reputation for providing challenge, opportunity, responsibility, and quality. Our work demands clear thinking, strong writing, and insightful analysis, all in a fast-paced environment.
At DOB, interns work side by side with career professionals to provide meaningful contributions to efforts that, depending on the specific assignment, may include:
• Analyzing State agency operations;
• Developing budgetary and policy recommendations;
• Evaluating proposed legislation;
• Negotiating with legislative staff;
• Monitoring revenues and expenditures;
• Managing Federal, state, and local relations;
• Developing and implementing gubernatorial initiatives; and
• Monitoring and managing program and project performance.
Through an internship with DOB, you’ll have the opportunity to work in the heart of the policy arena, with a unique vantage point from which to learn the innerworkings of government.
Additionally, interns will have access to the professional development training available to all staff.
The experience gained at DOB provides a solid foundation on which to build careers in and around the policy arena. Many of our former interns have pursued career paths within DOB, throughout State government, in leadership roles in the non-profit arena and government management, as well as in the private sector.
As our work spans the full spectrum of policy areas, internships opportunities will be available in a variety of areas this spring. Internships are expected to continue through the summer and potentially through the school year, with possible remote work options available.
