Minimum Qualifications Applicants must possess a minimum of three (3) years of relevant, post-graduate legal experience. Applicants should have substantial experience in complex civil litigation and/or white-collar investigations, as well as familiarity with practice in both federal and New York state courts. Excellent writing, research, analytical, teamwork, and organizational skills are also required. Experience with the False Claims Act and/or tax matters is a plus, and trial experience is also desirable.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General’s Taxpayer Protection Bureau (TPB) is seeking an experienced litigator to lead and pursue complex civil investigations and litigation involving fraud committed against New York State and its local governments.
Formed in 2011 to handle whistleblower cases and investigations under the New York False Claims Act, TPB has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for New York taxpayers in broadly diverse cases involving, among other things, significant state construction projects, contracts for software and data services, failures to comply with MWBE and prevailing wage requirements, income tax evasion by major hedge funds, and sales tax evasion in the high-end art market. TPB’s investigations regularly involve coordination with other state and federal agencies and with whistleblowers, who file qui tam actions under the federal and New York False Claims Acts.
