Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license is preferred, but not required.

Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill four Trades Generalist positions. These are temporary/hourly positions in the Bureau of Environmental Design and Improvement located in the New York City area. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to the following:

Perform skilled carpentry duties, including the building, repair, and installation of counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, doors, windows, building framework, and roofs.

Install hardware for bathroom use such as towel and toilet paper dispensers, door hinges and grab bars.

Repair, maintain, and install plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, showers, bath tubs, and drinking fountains.

Install drywall, apply tape, skim coat, and tile or paint walls as needed.

Plan, lay out and complete plumbing and steam fitting work.

Install and repair ceiling and floor titles as needed.

Follow diagrams and blueprints for electrical installation.

Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.

Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Plan, and lay out work. Read and interpret plans and blue prints and plan the associated work accordingly.

Perform other project duties, as assigned.

Provide support as needed for supervisors and co-workers on assignments.

Additional Comments These position are part of the Downstate Special Projects team, which is responsible for completing capital funded projects at various facilities within the New York City and Long Island area. The regional revitalization team concept was first adopted for the New York City region in 1984-85, and soon expanded to five regions that cover the entire state. The Environmental Revitalization Teams are made up of temporary Trades Generalist, Maintenance Assistant, and Facility Operations Assistant 1 positions that perform ongoing maintenance and small renovation projects to augment facility support staff services. The teams operate on an ongoing basis, making visits at each OMH facility in the region twice each year.
