Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be eligible for OR possess a license and current registration as a professional nurse in New York State. Candidates must have the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Nurse 1 (Substitute) position at the New York State School for the Blind (NYSSB). The NYSSB provides educational and residential services to students who are blind and have additional disabilities. Under the direction of the Nurse Administrator 1, major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide health care to students in the absence of regular staff;
• Perform clinical rounds;
• Record and administer medications promptly;
• Assess health program for service delivery;
• Observe and record symptoms of illness accurately and objectively;
• Treat problems from standing orders;
• Maintain specific health records and reports on each student; and
• Communicate appropriately with students, direct care staff, parents and other health agencies with tact, confidence and in concert with school procedures.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary, hourly on-call position. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Candidates are required to possess a license and current registration as a professional nurse in New York State at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Nurse 1 (Substitute) is dependent upon maintaining a license and current registration as a professional nurse in New York State. Failure to maintain a license and current registration as a professional nurse in New York State will result in removal from employment. Nurse 1 (Substitutes) are notified by phone when services are needed. Every effort is made to give 24-hour prior notice. Hours will vary depending on the shift. First shift hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, second shift hours are Sunday through Thursday, 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, and third shift hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 pm to 7:00 am.
