Minimum Qualifications Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver's license as a term and condition of employment.

Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Trails Manager, the Regional Trails Technician oversees the regional trail crew and trail project operations in the field during the Spring/summer/Fall. Winter activities include working independently on assigned projects by the Regional Trails Manager. Projects during the Spring/Summer/Fall season may include but are not limited to, new trail construction, trail tread and drainage improvements, carpentry of dimensional lumber projects, constructing stone staircases and retaining walls, trail corridor maintenance, hazard tree/limb removal, signage installation, tool/gear maintenance and general facilities maintenance. During the field season, the position is 100% outdoors, during the off season the position is 75% outdoors and 25% office. Projects during the late fall/winter/early spring include but aren't limited to Surveying, data entering & management, development of promotional materials for the Backcountry Trails Program, assisting with volunteer event planning, assisting with trail project planning, Installing trail signage, corridor maintenance, equipment/tool inventorying & maintenance. Work performed outdoors will be in all weather conditions. The position requires work on uneven and steep terrain, carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment of 50 pounds or more. Office/Operations based out of Saratoga Spa State Park. Projects and work will be varying throughout the Saratoga Capital Region at 25 State Parks and State Historic Sites.

Responsibilities include but aren’t limited to:
· Leading & supervising the regional trail crew for all trail projects;
· Leading & supervising any volunteers that help with trail crew projects or volunteer trail workdays;
· Assist or lead trainings for the regional trail crew staff on tool use, tool maintenance and tool storage practices
· Responsible for keeping track of tools/gear/equipment used every day and seeing they receive the proper maintenance weekly;
· Manage & keep track of the crew members hours worked every pay period and submitting completed timecards;
· Responsible for keeping the provided state or rental vehicle records & sign outs daily. Responsible for seeing the provided state or rental vehicle cleaned/maintained for operations weekly;
· Responsible for tracking all statistics for work completed on field projects, gathering before & after pictures of projects, and pictures of staff working on projects for program
promotion & recruitment for future years.
· Assisting with volunteer recruitment and volunteer trail steward program development in the region;
· Assisting with Trail Crew member interviews & recruitment for field seasons.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
Leadership, volunteer coordination, and project management experience.
Experience with outdoor labor, working on a trail crew, and First Aid & CPR certifications are strongly desired.
Must be capable with instruction to safely use a variety of hand and/or power tools; shovels, pick mattocks, rock bars, sledgehammers, hammers, electric cordless drills & electric carpentry tools, rigging gear; grip hoist, rock nets & slings etc.)
Must be capable with instruction to safely operate, maintain, sharpen and clean tools/gear/equipment.
Must be capable of routinely lifting loads up to 50 lbs.
Must be capable of doing backcountry trail work efficiently & safely in rough, uneven terrain during summer conditions, while maintaining a good positive attitude.
Must demonstrate teamwork and display high standards of ethical conduct.
Able to represent the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation professionally.
