Minimum Qualifications Qualifications for the position of Director of Legislative Affairs are as follows:
• A minimum of four (4) years of prior work experience either in or with the NYS Legislature that demonstrates an increasing level of responsibility is required;
• A JD or a graduate degree in public policy or public administration is preferred;
• Strong understanding of the NYS Legislative and regulatory process;
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and strategic thinking skills;
• Ability to foster and maintain productive and effective relationships with elected officials, their teams and other key stakeholders/partners;
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, including self-managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines;
• Highly collaborative with the willingness to participate in other OAG projects and initiatives as determined by Executive leadership;
• Prior experience supervising and mentoring staff is a plus; and
• Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends, during the legislative session and peak budget negotiation period.

Duties Description The Executive Division of the New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a Director of Legislative Affairs for an exciting, fast-paced, senior-level opportunity. As head of the OAG, the Attorney General is both the “People's Lawyer” and the State's chief legal officer. As the “People's Lawyer,” the Attorney General serves as the guardian of the legal rights of the citizens of New York, its organizations and its natural resources. In her role as the State's chief legal counsel, the Attorney General not only advises the Executive branch of State government, but also defends actions and proceedings on behalf of the State. The OAG also brings affirmative litigation and develops policy initiatives on topics including civil rights, health care, environmental protection, labor, financial regulation and enforcement, public integrity, consumer protection, housing, drug trafficking, nonprofit law and many others. This position will be based in Albany and will report to the Senior Policy Counsel.

Duties of the Director of Legislative Affairs will include, but not be limited to the following:
• Advance the Attorney General’s legislative agenda with the NYS Legislature, including developing advocacy strategies to gain the passage of Attorney General Program Bills;
• Assist with drafting Attorney General Program Bills and other legislation;
• Serve as the OAG liaison to the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission;
• Monitor the State budget process and represent the Attorney General in State budget negotiations on Article VII bills;
• Monitor bill introductions by NYS legislators and keep senior staff and bureaus informed of relevant legislation;
• Maintain subject matter expertise and advise OAG staff on the nuances of the legislative process;
• Work with bureaus to develop positions on legislation impacting the budget, operations or other areas of interest for the OAG;
• Develop and maintain effective and productive relationships with legislators, their staff and other stakeholders;
• Provide feedback to legislators and their staff regarding pending legislation;
• Provide feedback to Executive Chamber staff on legislation, in particular bills that have passed both houses and are awaiting action by the Governor;
• Communicate with stakeholders and lobbyists regarding pending or potential legislation;
• Oversee and/or participate in special projects, including those related to the implementation of OAG-related legislation; and
• Supervise OAG staff working on legislative affairs.

Additional Comments The annual salary for this position is $104,030 - $129,173. The final salary will be determined after a complete evaluation of the selected candidate’s qualifications.
