Minimum Qualifications "Promotion: One year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker.
Open Competitive: one year of additional experience as described in each of the categories below, and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the supervision of employees in the breeding and care of small animals.
two years of satisfactory full-time experience handling and caring for small animals other than in a residential setting;
OR
certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician, and one year of satisfactory full-time experience handling and caring for small animals in other than a residential setting;
OR
satisfactory completion of two-years' course work in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, animal science, or a related field."
Preferred Qualification:
Three years of experience as a Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker working for a New York State entity; OR an associate degree in veterinary technology, biological sciences or a related field and two years of experience in a laboratory animal research setting; OR four year of experience in a laboratory animal research setting. Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Scientist (AALAS) would be advantageous.
Duties Description Under the general direction of the Veterinarian, the Principal Laboratory Animal Caretaker will provide direct animal care and important supervisory, technical, and administrative assistance with the overall operation at Wadsworth Center's two campus locations that house laboratory animals. Duties include supervisory, technical and administrative tasks, as well as animal operations and facility care/maintenance.
Additional Comments "Standard work hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm. Mandatory weekend overtime will be required on a rotating basis. Weekend on-call/standby may also be required.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, which include performing essential functions of this position. Therefore, the incumbent will be required to wear personal protective equipment including respiratory protection such as a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) or N95 respirator and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
The incumbent will be required to lift up to 40 pounds while performing essential functions of this position. "
