Minimum Qualifications Grade 18: Bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, or pharmacology, and two years of professional research experience in a related field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the following is preferred: human health risk assessments; managing, evaluating, and interpreting scientific data; writing or contributing to scientific reports; knowledge of contaminant fate and transport principles, particularly in aquatic systems; aquatic ecology and basic fisheries experience; coursework in limnology or ichthyology; refining complex scientific information to produce clear and concise information for all audiences; and Excel, Microsoft Access, Word, and statistical data analysis software.
Duties Description The Research Scientist I will support the Department of Health's Fish Advisory Program by assessing health risks associated with exposure to contaminants in sportfish and game in New York State. The incumbent will be responsible for processing, managing, and summarizing analytical results for legacy and emerging contaminants; contributing to data summaries and assisting with recommendations for risk management decisions; report writing; meeting with colleagues in the Department of Health, other state and federal agencies, and private consultants; translating findings and conclusions into public health messaging; and performing literature searches and giving oral presentations
Additional Comments Contingent permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%).
