Minimum Qualifications Grade 25: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field, and four years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a master’s degree in one of the above fields, and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR a doctoral degree in one of the above fields, and one year of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualification: Excellent written and technical communication skills; understanding of analytical methods for microbiological, organic, and inorganic compounds typically found in drinking water; ability to develop, manage, and execute complex environmental sampling plans and quality assurance project plans; ability to conduct data analysis using SAS, ArcGIS, Access (Virtual Basics for Applications experience is also a plus), and Excel; experience managing diverse teams in a research or regulatory environment; experience in drinking water, drinking water treatment, cooling towers, or building water systems.
Duties Description The Research Scientist will work in the Bureau of Water Supply Protection's Water Systems Control and Analysis Unit. The incumbent will conduct research directed toward protecting the public from illness associated with public and private water supplies, building water systems, and cooling towers. The incumbent will be part of a team of research scientists, engineers, and public health specialists whose responsibility it is to implement regulations to protect against Legionella for cooling towers and health care facilities, and respond to outbreaks associated with Legionella in multiple settings. The incumbent will manage and participate in environmental epidemiology research and investigation activities focusing on water sources in the built and natural environment, including premise plumbing, cooling towers, private wells, natural water bodies, and water quality and treatment. In addition, the incumbent will take a lead role in regulatory activities, including drafting updates and providing guidance to stakeholders. The incumbent will also direct research activities related to other aspects of drinking water quality protection, and plan the strategic direction of grant proposals associated with private wells, harmful algal blooms, and other related topics.
Additional Comments Permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Appointment level will be determined based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Occasional travel throughout New York State to areas not served by public transportation may be required (5%).
