Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. and nine years of professional experience, including specific research and teaching assignments in an appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education accredited veterinary college or school and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of New York.
• USDA accredited veterinarian preferred.
• Demonstrated training and experience in all aspects of laboratory animal medicine, or graduate from an AVMA certified program leading to eligibility for board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), or Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
• Minimum of 9 years’ experience and training in an animal care and use program with a wide array of research animal experience using a variety of animal models in an academic environment. Experience participating in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities.
• Possess a broad range of experiences with a variety of laboratory animals, in-depth knowledge of current Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and familiarity with American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.
• Demonstrated experience in establishing positive relationships with investigators and other key stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to manage people on a day-to-day basis and inspire a high level of commitment and performance.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Duties Description • Serves as the Attending Veterinarian of record for NKI.
• Advises the Institution on all issues affecting animal care, housing, and use of research animals.
• Provides clinical and surgical support for animals.
• Provides support for maintaining individual as well as colonies of specialized lab animal models such as those genetically engineered or manipulated.
• Shares responsibility for developing, implementing, and monitoring programs to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Appointed by the Institutional Official (IO) to serve as a voting member of the IACUC and IBC.
• Participates in the veterinary review for all animal use protocols and provides assistance to investigators in the development of protocols for IACUC submission and inspection.
• Provides a framework for ensuring that all veterinary clinical standards of care, laws, regulations, and guidelines related to humane animal care and use, biosafety/biosecurity are met and that AAALAC accreditation standards at the level of Director of Lab animal resources are maintained.
• Supervises administrative, veterinary, and lab animal technical staff. Oversees training and educational programs for lab animal veterinary, technical, and research staff.
• Provides research support and consultations to research community.
• Manages and oversees the overall budget including analysis and forecasting of program and resource requirements for current and projected future services in support of research.
Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review: Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC) which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
