Minimum Qualifications We are seeking a seasoned attorney with at least four to five (4-5) years of solid medical malpractice litigation experience, including trial experience, to defend the state in medical malpractice actions from commencement through trial. Applicants must have experience working with expert witnesses, e.g., retaining and vetting as well as preparing for, taking and defending depositions and trial testimony; the ability to read and understand medical records, and the ability to manage a large caseload. Excellent lawyering skills, including motion practice, legal research, writing, analysis, negotiation and advocacy, are also required. Candidates should also possess strong organizational skills. Medical malpractice trial experience is preferred although other civil or criminal trial experience will be considered.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General’s Claims Bureau in New York City is seeking a trial attorney to defend Medical Malpractice cases. The Claims Bureau represents the State of New York and its agencies in the Court of Claims and its employees in State Supreme Court. The selected candidate will defend the State in medical malpractice actions, from commencement through trial, with post-trial briefs often required.
