Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in wildlife management/biology or similar.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
- Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning Systems.
- At least one year of experience related to deer management.
- At least 6 months of experience related to game bird management.

Duties Description The Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 will support the regional biologists in administering projects and performing job duties that further New York State's deer, migratory waterfowl, upland game bird, and Wildlife Management Area management plans and programs. Job duties and responsibilities by program area include:

Deer Management (55%)
- Review applications, perform site visits, make impact determinations, and issue permits under the Department's deer management assistance and deer damage assistance programs utilizing the Department's nuisance wildlife database.
- Collect, prepare, and deliver carcass/tissue samples for the Department's chronic wasting disease and epizootic hemorrhagic disease surveillance and response efforts.
- Perform routine inspections of captive cervid facilities.
- Collect, record, and submit deer population and demographic data from hunter-harvested deer.
- Field and provide educational resources to the public and stakeholders regarding deer biology, management, and hunting.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.

Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Management (25%)
- Assist with implementation of habitat and access projects on regional WMAs including forest management projects.
- Assist with maintenance planning and implementation on WMAs including boundary line marking, developing Scopes of Work for infrastructure repair, etc.
- Assist with the regional land acquisition program.

Migratory Game Birds (10%)
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's annual waterfowl survey.
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's biennial mute swan survey.
- Assist with waterfowl trapping, banding, and transmitter deployment efforts.
- Review applications, perform site visits, make impact determinations, and issue records of authorization to take Canada geese under a federal depredation or control order.
- Field and provide educational resources to the public and stakeholders regarding migratory waterfowl biology, management, and hunting.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.

Upland Game Bird (10%)
- Coordinate delivery, transport, and stocking of pheasants on the Department's regional wildlife management areas.
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's annual American woodcock survey.
- Assist in habitat management efforts that support upland game birds under the Department's young forest initiative.
- Field and provide educational resources to the public and stakeholders regarding upland game bird biology, management, and hunting.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 35 pounds.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 3/31/2022. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to date listed. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
