Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Non-Competitive Appointment: Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, design, media arts, museum studies, history, anthropology, geology, paleontology, or biology, AND six years of work experience in museum exhibit design, planning, production, or project management. At least three years of the experience must have involved project management and supervisory responsibilities in a large research museum with focus on natural or human history and/or fine arts. A Master’s degree in fine arts, design, media arts, museum studies, history, anthropology, geology, paleontology, or biology may be substituted for one year of the required museum exhibit design, planning, production, or project management experience.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Director, Museum Exhibits position in the New York State Museum. The New York State Museum welcomes approximately 500,000 visitors a year to its exhibit halls. The Director, Museum Exhibits will play a critical role as the Museum undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation of exhibition galleries over the next several years. Reporting to the Director of the State Museum, the incumbent of this position will oversee every aspect of exhibition development – from initial planning and design to multi-media and production. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Direct and oversee the work of more than 30 staff members involved in exhibition planning, exhibition and graphic design, exhibition production and audiovisual, and media production staff and projects;
• Supervise staff on cross institutional exhibit teams to implement the Museum Gallery Renewal, special, and virtual exhibitions;
• Collaborate with State Museum Research and Collections, Education, and Design and planning staff to organize exhibitions;
• Oversee the project management, fabrication, and gallery construction of exhibition installations and maintenance of galleries;
• Provide design, editing, media and production support for museum publications, education programs and events;
• Provide object and art handling, mounting, preparation, transport to museums, and external loaned collections;
• Manage the fabrication and installation of Museum-produced, loaned and traveling special exhibitions;
• Serve as a member of the Museum’s senior management team responsible for strategic decision-making, planning and leadership;
• Oversee all aspects of exhibition development and implementation including: planning, design, production, and media integration;
• Provide and coordinate graphic and media services to various OCE and NYSED program areas, and
• Foster collaboration on public exhibitions with the NYS Executive Chamber, New York State agencies including OGS, Plaza Art collections, NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and museums across the State.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary appointment pending Civil Service Commission approval of the Non-Competitive Jurisdictional Class. At such time, the appointment will become Permanent, Non-Competitive. This position has been designated as policymaking and/or confidential. The incumbent will serve at the discretion of the Commissioner of Education. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Candidates are required to possess at the time of hire.
